Common questions

How do I play?
Place stars on the grid so that every row, every column, and every outlined region holds exactly the same number of stars — one in the 1-star game, two in the 2-star game — and no two stars ever touch, not even diagonally. You've solved the board when every row, column, and region has its full count and no star sits next to another. Tap a cell to place a star; tap again to pencil-mark it as a cell you've ruled out; tap once more to clear it.

What do the coloured regions mean?
The grid is divided into irregular coloured regions, and each region must contain exactly the same number of stars as each row and column. The regions are the extra constraint that makes every board solvable by logic — reasoning about where a region's star can and can't go is usually how you crack it.

What's the difference between 1-star and 2-star?
In the 1-star game (the "Queens" style) every row, column, and region holds exactly one star. In the 2-star game ("Two Not Touch") every row, column, and region holds exactly two. Two-star boards are more tightly constrained and tend to be the deeper challenge. You can play either, in both Daily and Practice.

Do I ever have to guess?
No. Every puzzle has exactly one solution that can be reached by logic alone. If you're stuck, pencil-mark the cells you know can't hold a star — ruling cells out usually reveals where the next star must go. Long-pressing a placed star auto-marks the cells it rules out, to save you the busywork.

How do board size and difficulty relate?
Difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert) is about how deep the logic goes, not simply how big the board is — it's the deduction technique a puzzle demands. Boards range from 6×6 up to 9×9, with the larger, denser boards arriving in the harder bands. Choose the star count and difficulty you're in the mood for; every combination is solvable by pure reasoning.

Is there one daily puzzle or two?
Two. Each calendar day has a 1-star daily and a 2-star daily — the same boards for everyone — each with its own streak. Solve one or both. Practice mode gives you unlimited fresh boards of any size, difficulty, and star count whenever you like.

Can I change the language?
Quiet Stars follows your iPhone's language automatically — it's fully translated into fifteen languages. To switch, change your phone's language in iOS Settings (Settings → General → Language & Region, or per-app under Settings → Quiet Stars).

I missed yesterday's daily — can I play it now?
No. Daily puzzles are tied to the calendar day in your local time zone, and there is no archive of past dailies. Practice mode lets you play unlimited boards of any size, difficulty, and star count whenever you like.

How do I mute the music or sound effects?
Tap the music or sound icon in the header — it's on the Home screen and in the top bar while you play. Settings → Audio also has separate toggles plus volume sliders.

How do I reset my progress?
Settings → Reset all progress. This is permanent — there's no cloud backup, so once you reset, the stats and streaks are gone.

I'm colour-blind — can I still tell the regions apart?
Yes. Settings → Appearance includes an Accessible theme whose region colours are validated against colour-vision-deficiency simulation to stay distinct, and rule conflicts can be shown with a pattern as well as colour.

I have a feature idea.
Send it via email, or use Settings → Send feedback in the app — feedback shapes what comes next.
